Happy Halloween! This fall we have covered a LOT of ground, and particularly focused on “Back to School” resources. Even at this point in the year, it’s not too late to establish practices and expectations in classrooms! We also hit some rich philosophical topics related to the music of diverse cultures, as well as There is no place better to do that than right here. Back to School Pedagogy Episodes!!
Episode 216 is the most vulnerable peak into my classroom I have ever allowed. The WARM up time. You will see a sample of what we do to get kids ready to sing each day. Episode 219 goes into a good amount of detail regarding the way our individual literacy assessment pre-tests work. In Episode 217, I go back into the archive for a refresher with Betsy Cooke Weber on how to build a collaborative rehearsal space with student ownership. Episode 220 is, or should be, a BLOCKBUSTER. Dr. Anita Collins, of Bigger Better Brains and TED Talk fame joins me for a candid discussion about why neuroscientists have made assumptions about why instrumental music has better brain benefit that vocal music.
Episodes on Style, Culture, and Identity
Episode 215, was an Oxford Series episode with iconic American composer Libby Larsen. I loved this discussion about how much she appreciated her early music education as well as problems she sees in our modern “identity obsessed” culture. Episode 221, with Michael Barrett and Episode 218, with Kyle Pederson both came from my collaboration with GIA/Walton. Michael and I chatted about South Africa and the progress that has been made there since Apartheid. With Kyle, we discussed the transformational power of choral music and its text. Especially in the teen years. Episode 214, with Emorja Roberson digs in to the surge of Gospel music in American Academia. We have a nuanced conversation about the pros AND cons of this development.
I hope you will drop YOUR personal favorites in the comments! I would also love to hear what you want to hear about in 2024! You can also apply to appear on the show to discuss your passion points at Choralosophy.com
