I can’t believe it’s almost spring! Below we recap the crazy month of February. From the “Music Literacy Wars” that started in January and are still roiling, to the show’s 5 year anniversary, and a direct challenge to our popular ways of thinking about DEI! Patreon members will continue to get sneak peaks and a chance to weigh in with questions in advance! We also FINALLY launched a merchandise store!
Episode 186 featured author and Diversity trainer Chloé Valdary. This episode is bravely critical of the more popular brands of Anti-Racism and much of the rhetoric about diversity that is divisive and focused on categorizing people as either oppressed or oppressor. The luminaries of the Civil Rights movement that spoke of Agape Love as the movement’s highest aim is incompatible with the current Kendi/DiAngelo brand that much of Academia and the Fine Arts, including choral organizations has embraced. Episode 188 sees the return of researcher and teacher Martin Ashley with yet another challenge. If we use “Treble” in choral lingo to be interchangeable and gender neutral, do we discourage knowledge and teaching spaces that make a distinction between the needs of boys and girls? We also discuss the gap in choral singing between boys and girls with the latest research.

Episode 185 welcomes composer and computer programmer Nicholas Weininger. We discuss the difficulty in finding high quality choral music in the Hebrew language and Jewish tradition as well as the recent rise in Anti-Semitism from both the Left and the Right. The five year anniversary of the show was celebrated in a short but jam packed episode 187 that features audience testimonials as well as my Choralosophy origin story and the source of this platform’s reputation as the choir world’s growing “rebel underground.”
