Summer is here! Most people that wear teacher/student hats are high on the hog. School and choir may be the farthest thing on our minds. But, the work never stops here to provide free, weekly content for your poolside listening. We work really hard to make it worth your time! The month of May saw some fascinating conversations, useful teacher PD, a composer chat, and even my own kid’s short show debut. Episodes 197 and 198 kicked over some hornets nests. Oops… 197 was a review of my treatise on why we hamper music learners when we play their notes for them on the keyboard. 198 was completely innocent I promise, but a post about the “White people” being encouraged to learn and perform spirituals had some people in a Tizzy. All of the other recent topics which will be summarized and linked below. Patreon members will continue to get sneak peaks and a chance to weigh in with questions in advance! We also FINALLY launched a merchandise store!
Episode 193 features Jeremy Sovoy Jordan discussing the ongoing legacy of The Aeloians. In 194, Timothy Mount joined me to discuss his ideas expressed all the way back in 1982 that suggested that NO WOMEN should sing tenor. Well, that is a much more complicated issue for many reasons now. So, we hash it out a bit. Episode 195 guest is Bruce Rockwell. That conversation centers on the REAL source of inequity in music education. The widely varied music experiences of our elementary students around the country. 196 is a book review of The Anxious Generation by
of . I shared some facts, figures and analysis from the book, and provided some of my own from the perspective of a veteran public school teacher who has seen the changing teenagers first hand. Finally, in episode 199 I spend about 20 minutes reviewing the value of requiring kids to sing alone in choir classes. Including the ways we can assess and build culture that makes this a safe activity for kids. My daughter Clara joins me at the end to bear eye witness testimony to the system. Most recently, episode 200 is an Oxford Press episode featuring Katerina Gimon. Her initial success was with the piece, “Fire” which put her at risk for a while of being a “one hit wonder.” Tune in to hear the rest of the story.
