Ok, we are BACK at it in 2024 as the audience begins to roar back from their Holiday breaks. January was a big month, so let’s review. Patreon members will continue to get sneak peaks and a chance to weigh in with questions in advance! There were 5 Wednesdays in January which means five BIG episodes to start your year off! We also FINALLY launched a merchandise store!
Episode 184 is the main attraction and is already blowing up. Recently, the Choral Journal, a publication of the American Choral Directors Association published an article advocating for the REMOVAL of sight singing from All State choir auditions inclusion based grounds. I of course, think this would be a tragic decision, so I invited the author Dr. Marshaun Hymon on to discuss this with myself and return guest Dr. Chantae Pittman. (Episode 118: Leveling the Playing Field.)
Episode 180 with Ebuka Ezeakacha has also made a splash by making the criticism of two common American Choral music practices. 1. Putting “African” music into a box despite the vast diversity of musical cultures within Africa, and 2. The creation of Westernized, very popular Choral arrangements of pieces that “sound African” but are often inauthentic.
I also did three episodes in January focused on the “Teacher Life,” or the education ecosystem for Music Education. In 181, Jimmy Robertson joins me to discuss the comparison game and the need to balance our mental health needs with the job. In 182, I hosted a panel episode with three young women just starting out their music education careers to “compare notes” on what it is like for them now, vs. when I was their age. In 183, it’s Lynn Atkins to discuss the unique challenges in Higher Education right now related to training the next generation of music educator.
