Here we are, in one of the more grueling parts of the year. As a teacher, we see less sunlight, which means tired kids. The honeymoon is over with new students, and they are realizing the hard work ahead. We have to stay motivated, so that they will stay motivated. The Choralosophy podcast is HERE for you in the darkest season, so stay tuned. Below is a summary of our fall topics, as well as links to episodes.
In episode 165, we had a great conversation about DEFINING choral music in order to more effectively advocate for it. I read audience comments and thoughts from the Choralosophers Facebook page. Then, just for kicks, I turned the camera on myself and recorded a rehearsal of my high school chamber choir and allowed you to be a fly on the wall.
I also had the honor of hosting conversations with a two fascinating choral colleagues, and even a WHOLE high school choir! Jocelyn Hagen came on to talk about the goals she is moving toward with her “Compose Like a Girl” initiative designed to be the next step in the march of progress toward equal footing for woman as composers. Then I spoke with Kelsey Burkett about her quest for identity in her life as well as her teaching. We also discussed issues of racial bias in education.

Episode 168 was special. Beth and I travelled all the way to Kalispell, Montana to do a clinic with Nathan Connell and his Glacier High School Concert Choir. The episode we created was a conversation with his whole group of teenagers about what their choir means to them.
Finally, I spoke with “The Music Teacher’s Guide,” Dr. Angela Ammerman about major barriers that young potential music teachers face when considering the profession, as well as topics like embracing the idea that we don’t always have to be the “best” musician in the room to be the conductor or teacher. I also spoke with the illustrious and beloved conductor of the London Bach Choir, David Hill about the need to cultivate the culture of “Choral Musicianship.”
