Ok, Choral Music and discourse fans, are we ready for “tourist season?!” December is possibly our busiest month of the year, but the programming will continue for you all on Choralosophy! Before we get there, let’s look back at November which had it’s fair share of blockbuster episodes!
Most recently, in Episode 176, Dr. André Thomas joined me in an episode that exploded with feedback both publicly and privately. The conversation centered on the African American Spiritual, but was expansive in connecting that particular cultural expression to any other, in that every music we perform is deserving of our research, time and respect. During the week of Thanksgiving, I posted a blog and accompanying episode here on Substack that was essentially a meditation on the importance of GRATITUDE in a world of criticism.

Episode 172 stirred the pot a bit by attempting to shatter some misconceptions about what “middle schoolers are ready for,” or “are capable of.'“ I met separately with Ian Henning and Jacob Garcia who have recently begun teaching “The Choralosophy Method” in their own ways to great success. Dr. Jeffrey Murdock joined me in Episode 173 to discuss several things. We hit misconceptions about and the importance of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, as well as the problem of “expertise” in Choral Music and Music Education.
And, last but SHOULDN’T be least was episode 174. A short and digestible overview of how the body of interdisciplinary research on reading and the brain known now as “The Science of Reading” impacts, or should impact us as music educators. (Below, you will see a classroom video I recorded to accompany this episode that has gone viral around the world. )
